Names of 12 individuals (4 men and 8 women) who belonged to jury at the case against the former baseball player Roger Clemens were released by the judge Reggie Walton.
The government wanted the jury to be convinced that the athlete had lied before the Congress about administration of steroids and HGH. But since the jury didn’t believe it, the government criticized the persons that acted as the jury. Some persons who acted as the jury were interviewed.
A political activist, an art historian, a teacher of deaf children, an official of Treasury Department and an employee of the Canadian Embassy composed the jury.
Joyce Robinson-Paul, a political activist, was interviewed by the New York Daily News some days after Roger Clemens was cleared of the charges. She noticed that the jury knew that they had to be fair to both the government and the sportsman. But they didn’t find anything that had to be pursued. Later she also noticed that the government couldn’t prove their suspicions.
Bradford Weaver, an employee of the Canadian Embassy claimed that the government was wrong. This person noted that such cases should not occur again. This person also made it clear that there was nothing to be prosecuted. Bradford Weaver was interviewed by the Associated Press. This person also noted that each juror was convinced from the very beginning that Clemens was not proven guilty of any charge. Bradford Weaver pointed that each juror was unanimous.
Bradford Weaver was also asked whether he thought that Roger Clemens really used steroids. The Associated Press also asked him whether he believed that the governmental case against the athlete represented just the waste of taxpayers’ funds. But he refused to answer the questions.
Another juror that preferred not to be identified confirmed that the jurors didn’t understand how the government made the decision to waste huge sums of money during 5 years in order to prosecute the baseball player. This person noted that it was impossible to understand why the prosecution lasted for five years.
Other jurors didn’t provide any information.
As for federal prosecutors, they were totally disappointed. They declined to respond to the statements pronounced by the jurors.
